The Daytona “Paul Newman” that Made An Appearance in Crazy Rich Asians
With a title like Crazy Rich Asians, we were completely expecting a garish showcase of abundance in the film loaded with super vehicles, palatial manors, uber yachts, sumptuous gems, extravagant closets, and obviously, a large group of extravagance watches . Also, we were not frustrated—especially in the horology division.
Among the host of top of the line watches we found in the film, from Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) vintage Omega Seamaster DeVille (the entertainer’s own) to Eleanor Sung Young’s (Michelle Yeoh) precious stone Richard Mille (the entertainer’s own) to Bernard Tai’s (Jimmy O. Yang) rose gold Hublot, there’s one that got our attention. It was as a matter of fact a vintage Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman.” But how did the film figure out how to source a particularly noteworthy (and bona fide!) vintage Rolex watch to include in a crucial scene in the film? We can thank our companion Eric Wind for that.

Kevin Kwan Seeks Crazy Rich Watch
As Eric relates in his story , the writer of the book Crazy Rich Asians , Kevin Kwan, contacted Eric for assist with a “watch crisis” for a scene that should have been shot in Malaysia in a couple of brief days. The scene was to highlight Astrid Teo (Gemma Chan,) otherwise known as “The Goddess,” gifting her better half, Michael Teo (Pierre Png), a watch in the wake of enjoying some extravagant adornments for herself.
But what watch would a particularly complex character like Astrid consider qualified to provide for her recently printed CEO companion? Particularly since the movie’s chief, Jon M. Chu, needed to “include a watch that will truly intrigue watch gatherers.”

After a couple of fruitless endeavors to get another watch from Swiss watch produces, Eric at long last found a genuine watch authority in Singapore who was able to loan his intense vintage Rolex to the film’s prop ace, Justine Dunn.
The watch was a Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman” ref. 6263 with a Panda Mark II dial, otherwise called the “Shellfish Newman” because of the Oyster text under the Rolex logo. While on set in May 2017, this particular Daytona model had an estimation of about $500,000, which has now swelled to about $600,000.
In another fascinating turn to the story, the record-breaking $17.8 million offer of Paul Newman ‘s own Daytona “Paul Newman” occurred after the shooting of that scene. Therefore, the Rolex Daytona that got its own screen time in Crazy Rich Asians is befittingly like the world’s most costly watch at any point sold at sell off. Crazy, for sure.
